Ceredigion Folk Song Map

Some years ago when I was in Senegal, West Africa immersing myself in the culture of the ‘Griot’ (musicians with a role similar to the ‘cyfarwyddwyr’ of old) I came across a musical map of the region with melodies for the Kora (a kind of harp with two rows of strings) with the village of origin noted alongside. This was the first time that it had struck me that music could be something which belonged to a place, not just to an individual.

This image remained seared in my mind and when I started the process of mapping the musical topography of Ceredigion as part of the Cynefin project, I asked the very talented Aberystwyth artist Peter Stevenson to create a song map of Ceredigion, featuring 25 notable folk songs from the county, each illustrated and located in the towns and villages where they were originally sourced The result is a colourful and each catching smorgasboard of the collective musical imagination of the West Wales (click on the image for a bigger version).

Pan yr oeddwn yng Ngorllewin Affrica rhai blynyddoedd yn ôl yn trochi fy hunan yn niwylliant y ‘Griot’ (cerddorion athrylith gyda rôl debyg i gyfarwyddwyr yr hen ddyddiau) gwelais fap o alawon lleol ar gyfer y Kora (offeryn tebyg i’r delyn gyda dwy res o dannau) wedi’i nodi lawr gyda’r pentrefi lle yr oeddent yn tarddu. Dyma’r tro cyntaf i fy nharo bod cerddoriaeth yn rhywbeth sydd yn gallu perthyn i le penodol daearyddol, nid dim ond unigolyn.

Fe arhosodd y ddelwedd yma yn fy meddwl a pan ddechreuais y prosiect o fapio tirlun cerddorol Ceredigion daeth y syniad o greu map tebyg imi. Felly gofynnais i’r arlunydd dawnus o Aberystwyth, Peter Stevenson i greu map o ganeuon werin Ceredigion. Mae’r map yma yn cynnwys 25 o ganeuon werin nodedig y sir, gyda phob un wedi’u darlunio yn y trefi neu’r pentrefi lle y maent yn deillio. Mae’r canlyniad yn fap lliwgar, deniadol sydd yn portreadu dychymyg cerddorol Gorllewin Cymru (cliciwch ar y llyn am fersiwn mwy o faint).
